ABSTRACT
Cases Analysis of the Status& Perspective Activation of Elderly Education Based on the University
This study is related to the elderly education under the theories of continuous learning and psycho-social identity development. The objective of this study was to review the current conditions of educations for the elderly at university, identify problems, and propose prospective activation of elderly education post-secondary education.
Korean society has entered an aging society since 2000, and a lot of local universities have currently been faced with problems due to the decrease in numbers of applicants. Thus, the university may overcome such problems by providing opportunities to the elderly for continuity education. Theoretical background of elderly education has been described in this study based on literature review, reference to various documents and relevant studies. Issues associated with elderly education were found by looking into the current status and real-life examples of elderly education offered at university. The measures for improvement and increase of elderly education proposed in this study include, more systematic government policies and support, university policies and support, and diversification of administrative measures.
The study found that, although elderly education provided by university has passed its nascent stage and is growing consistently, financial support for the elderly learners was not fully activated the program yet. In order to increase and improve, consistent public attention and policy makers' support at the levels of the central government, regional government, universities, corporations, the elderly themselves, and local citizens will be required.
