a) The Learning contract is as follows:
The client group that I will be investigating and addressing in my portfolio are people that are wheelchair bound who travel to and from major sporting events around the world. Watching various sporting events is seen as a significant leisure experience. This includes people that are wheelchair bound. Major sporting events often cater for wheelchairs, however many do not provide suitable facilities or easily accessible travel needs to get to and from the events.
At the end of this subject I will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the general characteristics of those people in wheelchairs traveling to and from major sporting events.
2. Identify the services provided to those in a wheelchair traveling to and from major sporting events as well as those facilities at the event itself.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges faced by those in a wheelchair traveling to and at major sporting events.
4. Investigate how a community has addressed providing services to people in wheelchairs and list ways based on my findings to improve these services.
5. Discuss the benefits of attending major sporting events by those people wheelchair Bound.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of how traveling in a wheelchair effects the attendance of major sporting events by those in a wheelchair.
b) Why did I choose this client group and why are the objectives important to me?
I made a last minute decision, got on a plane and flew to Greece to go the Olympics. Major sporting events have always played an important role in my life and I enjoy attending as a spectator, supporting my team or country. I had this opportunity to attend the 2004 Olympic games in Athens and it was during this time that I had to decide what topic and learning objectives I would do for this subject.
I started to think about a client group and a leisure activity. I’ve always had an interest in people that were confined to wheelchairs and I love sporting events. I put two and two together and started to think about how difficult it was especially at this event for spectators confined to wheelchairs to travel around Athens and to the events themselves.
I realized then and there that if I was confined to a wheelchair to make the type of decision that I did and fly across the world at a days notice would be near impossible. When I left I, figured that I would just arrive and when we got to Athens worry about finding accommodation, the language barriers and getting tickets to events.
