영문초록

In this paper we try to suggest that there are three levels in teaching Korean idioms to foreign students. The three levels are proposed using the degree of the clarity and the frequency of the idioms. The idioms in the elementary level are clear and frequent, the idioms in the intermediate level are half-clear and common, and the idioms in the advanced level are unclear and rare. We also try to suggest that there are three kinds of teaching methods in the three levels, respectively. We can teach the foreign students to compare the Korean idiom with the counterpart of the learner`s languages in the elementary level, and to find out something in common between the two cultures in the intermediate level, and to understand the history of the countries, the origin of the idioms, and the background of the cultures in the advanced level. This method can help the foreign students make fewer mistakes than other existing methods.
