A lot of the time we ask ourselves and others this simple but penetrating question as a means of checking the satisfaction of our present status: do you live to eat, or do you eat to live? And the evaluation is as simple as the question itself: if you’re eating as a means to simply sustain your life, that’s great, but if you’re not, you may have to look back at yourself and find something worth doing that has more value than… eating. And I believe that applying this basic principle to Briony could very well depict her most innate characteristic. What I find so intriguing about this character is that she just loves to write, write, and write: simply stating, Briony Tallis lives to write.
Most people regard an author of a book to write after he’s actually lived it. And this is perfectly reasonable in that one normally needs the experience to have the inspiration written on paper. But in that sense, I believe Briony to be very unique and different in that she actually seems to have a writing principle first, and then have her behaviors affected, adjusted to those principles. It’s as if she’s almost acting, living her life according to her thoughts and principles as a writer.
