이 두 인물을 통해 '물질중심적 성공신화'와 '순수한 이상에의 추구'로 와해된 채 제시됨으로써 그것이 내포하고 있던 원래 의미를 구현하지 못하고 있다는 점이다. Keller의 예에서 알 수 있듯이 당대 미국사회에서 "미국의 꿈"은 이미 물질적 성공이라는 가치로 오염되어 그 본연의 순수성을 상실했고, 이런 현실 속에서 Chris가 추구하는 이상은 결국 아무런 실행력도 갖지 못한 공허한 관념으로 전락되고 만다. 결과적으로 이 작품에서 Keller와 Chris 중 어느 누구도 이미 가치가 상실된 "미국의 꿈" 신화를 원래의 의미로 환원시킬 아무런 해결의 비젼도 제시하지 못한다. 오히려 이들을 통해 드러나고 있는 가치부재한 현실 자체가 대공황과 두 차례의 세계대전을 겪은 미국자본주의사회가 갖는 한계를 표출한다고 볼 수 있다.
가치부재의 현실 속에서 어떤 대안도 찾지 못했던 당대 사회의 한계는 결국 Miller로 하여금 극의 구성면에서 Larry의 편지라는 갑작스런 장치를 통해 Keller의 의식을 변화시키는 부자연스런 결과를 초래한다. 그러나 한편 이러한 구성상의 결함은 가치관을 상실한 사회에 대해 어떠한 비젼도 제시할 수 없는 작가 내면의 갈등을 시사한다고 볼 수도 있다.
자살을 고지하는 Larry의 편지는 Keller의 비윤리적인 물질중심적 가치관에 대한 비판을 담고 있을 뿐 아니라 이상주의자 Chris가 현실적인 무력함을 극복하고 따라야 할 모범을 제시하고 있다(Scanlan 133). 문제는 Chris와는 달리 이렇듯 이상실현에의 행동력을 지닌 Larry가 극 중에는 등장하지 않는 상징적 존재 이상의 의미를 잦지 못한다는 사실이다. 그러므로 Larry의 편지는 이 극에서 Keller와 Chris를 통해 "물질적 성공신화"와 "이상에의 추구"로 분열된 채 나타나고 있는 "미국의 꿈"신화 자체가 당대 미국사회에서는 이미 어떤 실현가능한 가치로 존재할 수 없음을 강조하는 역설적인 결과를 낳는다.
