엘리자베스는 훌륭한 결혼이란 상호간의 장·단점을 사전에 인식하는데 있다고 확신한다. 결혼이란 남자와 여자간의 계약이며 동시에 사회와의 계약이기도 하다. 개인이란 주어진 사회라는 환경 없이는 존재할 수 없으며, 자유의지를 가진 개인과 공동규범을 갖춘 사회란 상호 대립하면서도 공존해야만 하는 운명이다. 두 남녀 주인공들이 서로에 대한 이해를 얻는 과정을 통해, 그리고 다른 여러 커플의 결혼의 유형을 통해, 오스틴은 암암리에 남녀사이에 놓여 있는 경제적·교육적 불평등과 여자들에게는 직업의 기회가 주어지지 않는 실태를 내보이고 있다. 그리고 엘리자베스로 하여금 자아인식을 통해 불평등한 여건들을 극복하고 성숙한 인간관계의 상징인 행복한 결혼에 이르게 한다. 이는 곧 사회 여건들에 의한 예속은 여자들의 정신적 성숙으로 극복 할 수 있음을 의미한다.
남녀 주인공인 다아시와 엘리자베스가 결혼에 이르는 과정에서, 다아시의 오만과 엘리자베스의 지나친 편견은 시종일관 많은 문제점들과 갈등을 일으키는 주요원인이 된다. 엘리자베스와 다아시의 자아 인식은 그들의 모든 사회적 장애를 극복하게 하고 그들을 낭만적인 결혼으로 이끈다.
