About 40 years ago, people living in the city of Los Angeles began to use water from Mono Lake. Slowly the lake began to dry up. As the amount of water in the lake got smaller, the water became saltier.
Think about a liter of water in a pan. If you add a half cup of salt, the water will be very salty. Then, suppose you boil the water until there is only half a liter left. The water will be much, much saltier than it was before. That is what happened at Mono Lake.
The water got so salty that the shrimp began to die. As more and more shrimp died, there was less and less food for the seagulls, and the baby seagulls began to die. To make matters worse, as the water level in mono Lake dropped, a land bridge was formed. Animals were able to cross the bridge and catch the seagulls on the island in Mono Lake.
