More Workers Now Hold Two Jobs
Surprisingly, nearly one out of every five workers at large companies are holding down two jobs, mainly for economic reasons, a survey by Jobkorea showed yesterday. In a survey of 4,035 company employees, 10.5 percent of the respondents said they had work other than their main jobs. In particular, 17.3 percent of employees at large companies said they had a second job, considerably higher than the 12.3 percent at venture companies and 8.8 percent at state-run enterprises. Asked about the reasons for having a second job, 70.7 percent said it was to make extra money. On the type of second jobs they were engaging in, 41.8 percent said they were Internet-related, followed by translation and other professional jobs with 27 percent and insurance sales with 19.9 percent. On the average monthly earnings from the second jobs, 31.2 percent said they were between 500,000-990,000 won, 26.2 percent specified 1 million-1.99 million won and 21.3 percent received less than 500,000 won. Another 6.4 percent said they were making over 5 million won from their side jobs. ``Holding down two jobs has become relatively easy with the convenient access to online systems, where people can work without having to travel from place to place,'' said one Jobkorea official.
