Do you believe that there are different kinds of born nature in one person? In the book, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the author Robert Stevenson demonstrates two characters, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll, who is respected and a high class gentleman in England society, is a character represented as goodness. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde who shows badness and evil is the other hid aspect of Dr. Jekyll. In short, what Stevenson wants to say through these two characters is there are two aspects of human nature which are goodness and badness.
Also, there are other authors who have similar ideas with Stevenson about duality of human being such as Herman Hesse who wrote Demian. In Demian, major character Sinclair who is the protagonist comes to know that the things people call evil also exists in human being and even the god, Abraxas. It’s said “The bird struggles out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever wants to be born, must destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas(60).” Abraxas, who has duality in him, is the god and devil, and goodness and badness at the same time. Like in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Demian, many people have been maintaining that human nature has goodness and badness.
Actually, we can find a lot of cases and foundations of dual aspects of human being in today our society. People sometimes compare those social examples to the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’s figure as a metaphor to understand or express better. Even the words “The Jekyll and Hyde Syndrome”
