recognized a silence like that which pervades a church after a service. I walked into the centre of the bazaar timidly. A few people were gathered about the stalls which were still open. Before a curtain, over which the words Cafe Chantant were written in coloured lamps, two men were counting money on a salver. I listened to the fall of the coins.
Remembering with difficulty why I had come, I went over to one of the stalls and examined porcelain vases and flowered tea-sets. At the door of the stall a young lady was talking and laughing with two young gentlemen. I remarked their English accents and listened vaguely to their conversation.
"O, I never said such a thing!"
"O, but you did!"
"O, but I didn't!"
"Didn't she say that?"
"Yes. I heard her."
"O, there's a ... fib!"
나는 6페니짜리 입구를 찾을 수가 없었다. 바자회가 끝날지도 모른다는 두려움을 갖고 나는 재빨리 지쳐 보이는 남자에게 1실링을 내고 십자형 회전문을 통과하여 지나갔다. 나는 홀 높이의 반쯤 되는 부분에 빙 둘러 회랑이 설치된 거대한 홀 안으로 들어섰다. 거의 모든 진열대는 닫았고 홀의 대부분은 어두웠다. 나는 마치 예배후의 널리 퍼지는 고요와 같은 것을 느꼈다. 나는 조심스럽게 바자의 중앙으로 걸어갔다. 몇몇 사람이 아직 열려 있는 노점 주위에 모여 있었다. 휘장 앞에 까페 샹땅(노래, 춤, 희가극 등을 공연하는 찻집)이라는 단어가 색전구로 쓰여져 있었고 두 명의 남자가 쟁반위의 돈을 세고 있었다. 나는 동전이 떨어지는 소리를 들었다.
내가 왜 왔는지를 어렵게 기억하면서 나는 상점 한 곳을 둘러보러 갔다. 그리고 사기로 만든 꽃병을 과 꽃무니 찻잔 세트를 살펴보았다. 상점의 문쪽에는 젊은 숙녀가 두명의 어린 신사들과 말하고 웃고 있었다. 나는 그들의 영국식 억양을 인지했고 멍하게 그들의 대화를 듣고 있었다.
“오, 나는 결코 그렇게 말한 적 없는데”
“오, 그렇게 했어”
“오, 아니에요 정말”
“그녀가 그렇게 말하지 않았나?”
“맞아 나도 들었는데”
“오 이런....거짓말”
Observing me, the young lady came over and asked me did I wish to buy anything. The tone of her voice was not encouraging; she seemed to have spoken to me out of a sense of duty. I looked humbly at the great jars that stood like eastern guards at either side of the dark entrance to the stall and murmured:
"No, thank you."
The young lady changed the position of one of the vases and went back to the two young men. They began to talk of the same subject. Once or twice the young lady glanced at me over her shoulder.
I lingered before her stall, though I knew my stay was useless, to make my interest in her wares seem the more real. Then I turned away slowly and walked down the middle of the bazaar. I allowed the two pennies to fall against the sixpence in my pocket. I heard a voice call from one end of the gallery that the light was out. The upper part of the hall was now completely dark.
Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.

더 머물러봤자 소용없다는 것을 알았지만 나는 그녀의 물건을 정말로 살 생각이 있었던 것처럼 보이게 하려고 그녀의 노점 앞에 계속 우물쭈물 머물러 있었다. 그런 다음 천천히 몸을 돌려 바자회 가운데로 걸어 나왔다. 나는 호주머니 속에서 두개의 페니를 6펜스 동전 위에 떨어뜨렸다. 나는 회랑의 한쪽 끝에서 불을 끈다는 목소리를 들었다. 홀의 위쪽 부분은 이제 완전히 어두워졌다.
어둠 속을 응시하면서 나는 나 자신이 무상함에 이끌려 조롱된 한 마리의 짐승같은 내 모습을 보았다. 그리고 나의 눈은 고뇌와 분노로 이글거리고 있었다.
