INTRODUCTION TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER:
Why are support networks necessary for parents and families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? ASD (Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder and Atypical Autism) are lifelong disabilities. Autism affects a way a person communicates and relates to others and the world around them. People with Autism have major impairments in three areas:
1) Social Interaction
2) Communication
3) Behaviour
As a result of their impairments, people with Autism often experience anxiety, frustration and confusion when faced with the demands of day-to-day living. The anxiety, frustration and confusion children with autism go through, is a reason as to why support networks are necessary.
According to the Autism Queensland website (http://www.autismqld.asn.au/, 2004), ASD affects:
People of all intellectual abilities from those with a profound intellectual disability to people who are more able, and in some cases, gifted
Approximately 4 boys to every girl
At least 1 person in every 250
There is no one cause for an ASD. The causes can be different in different people. Researchers are looking at several possible causes. These in clued a combination of genetic factors, viral infection, complication during pregnancy and chemical imbalances in the brain. Many researchers are studying different parts of the brain that they know are affected by ASD.
WHY I CHOSE THE CLIENT GROUP:
The client group of ASD was chosen on the following points:
I had limited knowledge of the disability
There were different types of ASD
It has a high occurrence rate of at least 1 in every 250 births
Found it interesting that it affected 4 boys to every girl
These points all contributed to my decision to pick this client group.
