한국도 국제전화 시스템이 최근 스마트폰으로 다 가능하지만 해외출장 나갈 때 기기 변경등 다소 불편한 점이 있다. 따라서 바로 호텔이나 또는 상담 중 다이얼 직통으로도 걸 수도 있다. 저개발 국가에서는 아직도 아래 방법으로 사용한다. 다음과 같은 세 종류의 통화방식이 있다.
① Collect call : 요금 상대편 지불 통화로서, 교환원이 상대편에게 받을 지 받지 않을 지를 물어서 받을 의사가 있음을 확인한 다음에 연결해 준다. 이 방법으로 걸게 될 가능성이 있는 상대에게는, 미리 허락을 받아 놓는 것이 좋다.
② Third-party call : 통화를 하는 당사자 이외의 제3자에게 요금의 청구가 되는 종류
③ Person-to-Person call : 지명통화라 일컬으며, 교환원에게 통화를 하고 싶은 상대방 이름과 자신의 이름을 말하면, 교환원은 상대가 전화통에 나온 것을 확인한 후에 연결해 준다. 지명통화의 이점은, 통화하고 싶은 상대가 집을 비웠거나 전화를 받을 수 없을 경우에는 통화료가 청구되지 않는다는 점이다.
또한 비싸긴 하지만 Person-to-Person call과 Collect call을 혼합해서 신청할 수도 있다. 공중전화로 국제전화를 걸때에는 잔돈 준비가 필요치 않은 Collect call로 하는 편이 편리하다.
