As a Korean citizen I felt empowered when I joined millions of protestors marching on the streets of Seoul in opposition to our corrupt government. This experience revealed to me the power of protest as I was able to contribute to positive change in my country. When I moved to Germany, learning about life in former East Germany made me reflect upon the current political situations surrounding the divided Korean peninsula and compare them with German reunification. As an IB HL History student, my personal reading of articles from Geopolitical Futures raised questions such as, what would the impact of Korean unification be on the complicated regional dynamics of Northeast Asia? As seen in Germany, will neighboring states play a major role in attaining peaceful unification? Of particular interest is the shifting role of China in the midst of the inter-Korean peace process and the US-China trade war. Through my independent research, I concluded that China's geostrategic embrace of North Korea above denuclearization will continue to increase tensions in relations with the US. It is issues like these that I would like to explore through my study of politics and international relations.
