[Abstract]
A Study of George Santayana's aesthetic theory
Lee, Eun-Jeung
In various field of aesthetics of twenty century, one of those who deal with in particular epistemological and psychological aesthetic problems is George Santayana (1863-1952). He is representative philosopher in that area. Generally, the Santayana's aesthetic view is found well in his early philosophical thought. He suggested eminent view through his early works in comparison with Hegelianism and metaphysical tendency which have overflown at that time.
In particular, he tried not only to pursue the completed theory of aesthetics in The Sense of Beauty (1896), his first work of aesthetics, but also to emphasize that the sense of beauty, not the universal theory of beauty which pursued in a usual aesthetic, has the important place in our life and is experienced directly. Really The Sense of Beauty is acknowledged as a fruit that has systematically described the psychological origin of our consciousness of beauty and aesthetic exprience.
This treatise tries to consider Santayana's early thought of aesthetics through the analysis of The Sense of Beauty . The core of his thought in The Sense of Beauty is to emphasize the beauty as 'objectified pleasure' and to give an explanation of the art, in relation to the realization of such a beauty. And, after explaining the meaning and nature of beauty as objectified pleasure, Santayana devides human consciousness into three elements, as it were, materials, form and expression which produce objectified pleasure. In his view of explaining them, we can find the trend idealistic as well as naturalistic.
In short, to grasp the world as aesthetic is to perceive that beauty is not simply connected with material object but is finally included in spiritual dimension. And to grasp the world as aesthetic must eventually move on grasping it as completeness, thus the aesthetic possession of the world plays an important role about moral life of man. This is the emphasis of Santayana. But if we confine the theory of aesthetic of Santayana's as simply lifting the moral consciousness of man, the good point and value of Santayana's aesthetics is not known.
The eminency that Santayana's theory of aesthetics has, is above all in the fact he descrives subjective consciousness of man, which reflect aesthetic object, elaborately and closely. Because of this, in spite of the fault that he confines beauty in the ordinary life of man, and exclude it from sociality and historical view, his theory of aesthetics becomes as not being able to throw out, as containing plentiful nutrition.
