veals the conception of 'self' in communitarianism. First, the view of the community in communitarianism implies that it is the danger of totalism which accentuates the 'common goods','common understanding', it overlooks the existence of suppression and domination in a complex society, it ignores the social structual contradiction such as women's suppression and racist distinction. The view of the community in communitarianism is thus conceptualized as 'community on homogenity'.
Next, the communitarian self cannot be equally treated with the feminist self. Although the communitarian self overcomes the conceptual limits of the liberal self, but it reproduces the self/others, member/outsider dualism. That is to say, the communitarian self accentuates only the other's desire and understanding, and the self's obligation to the other. In this conception, the women's self is connected to virtues such as 'self-sacrifice','altruism', and 'vulnerability'. And the communitarian self conception ignores the variable social factors affecting self composition such as sexuality, race, gender relation, class, and so on. In the communitarian self conception, the self is only constituted through traditional ways such as family, state, nation, and neighborhood. Morever, it excludes outsider clearly.
With a feminist analysis on connunitarianism, this study tries to constuct a feminist communitarian theoy. The feminist community conception is related importantly to the following question: "How do we deal with differences or hetergenity in our communities?" Therefore, 'community' in feminism is conceptualized as "community on heterogenity" , "community as a process" acknowledging the variable understanding and values between members. It implies also that the community is the place of complex troubles between differential understanding. The matter on how to resolve heterogenital troubles can be approached through the feminist self conception i.e. "the boundary self". This boundary self conception implies that the self is 'connected and seperated at once, through 'playful travel' to the other's world, so that the self is the borderdweller between the self's world and the other's world. In this self conception, women's self is no more connected to virtues such as 'self-sacrifice','altruism', and 'vulneralbility'. Now the self can be understood positively. The self is no more sacrificed for the other's voices. The differences between the self's desires and the other's desires are the explorable world. Also we can learn how to embrass unassimiliated otherness from this self conception.
Therefore the differences and heterogenity between the self and the other in a community is a process of overcoming boundaries. And the feminist communitarian self dismisses such dualism as self/other, insider/outsider, and us/them. Lastly, the feminist communitarian self conception provides an emancipatory model for us to negotiate our existence in the complex web of human relationships.
