상이 되지 않기 위해서 동시에 봉쇄의 과정이 필수적이다. 햄릿은 이러한 과정―응시의 전복성과 응시를 통한 봉쇄―을 잘 진행하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 사회에서 시각과 해석의 우위 선점은 바로 권력의 확보로 연결된다. 이 시대의 군주는 이상적이고 초월적인 전지성을 상실한 세속적 결함을 갖고 있는 군주이다. 그러나 절대 왕권의 유지를 위해서는 어떻게 하든 그 전지성을 회복해야만 했고, 이를 위한 노력은 일정 부분 감시체제 가동에 의한 정보 확보 의지의 실천을 통해 이루어질 수 있었다. 따라서 실제로 관찰과 응시의 관계망은 바로 초기 근대 사회 궁정 정치의 전형적인 양상으로 제시된다. 보고 해석하는 능력이 권력이 되는 사회로 진입하게 된 것이다. 햄릿과 클로디우스를 중심으로 벌어지는 갈등은 바로 이러한 정치적 감시, 정보전 속에서 진행되었던 것이다.
