Substance Abuse Treatment in
the United States and the Current Trends

Although substance abuse is an increasing social problem in Korea, substance abuse treatment programs are not underdeveloped. The purposes of this article are to describe the components of the substance abuse treatment systems in the United States and to introduce a substance abuse program. It also describes the current interest in patient-treatment matching and the treatment of individuals with both mental illness and substance abuse. Based upon the overview of the treatment systems in the United States, this article suggests that departments of social welfare educate and train students on this area in order for them to take a vital role in treating individuals who are suffering from substance abuse.
