The men in my class would protest that the women who never or rarely participate in class do not permit men to lay down the privilege of nearly dominating class discussion. But they rush into the void too easily not to bear some of the responsibility for the gender imbalance in class discussion. Privilege has been given to them like a birthright. It has immense staying power, in part because it is so normal that it's hard to see. It will never change until everyone, male and female, takes responsibility.
