Smallest data entity to which timing can be attributed
No two access units from the same ES have same DTS or CTS
Any further partitioning of the data in an elementary stream is not visible for the purposes of the systems decoder model
Access units are conveyed by SL-packetized streams and are received by the decoding buffers.
SPS data payload enters the decoding buffers, i.e., the side information is removed at the input to the decoding buffers.
The decoders consume access units with the necessary side information (e.g., time stamps) from the decoding buffers.
It is furthermore possible to split an access unit into several fragments for transmission
