어느 날, 지나가던 길에 John Durbeyfields는 어느 목사에게 자신이 원래는 d’Urbervilles 가문의 후손이라는 얘기를 듣게 된다. 그리고 대수롭지 않게 지나가버린, 그러나 운명적인 Angel과 Tess와 처음 만나게 된다. 하지만, 춤 상대로 선택되지 않은 것에 대해 Tess는 약간의 원망을 느끼게 된다. 자신의 집의 형편이 어려워진 Tess는 내키지 않았지만, 자신의 집안이d’Urbervilles라는 오래된 가문의 후손이라는 것 하나만 믿고 그 집으로 향한다.



To speak honestly, I didn’t like this story and understand Tess while I was reading because I like love the story, but hate the tragedy. So I stopped reading it because it was depressing me. However, I picked it up again because I wanted to know what happened to Tess. I was waiting for the happy ending that never comes.

he story is about young girl who lives with her poor family in the old cottage. Tess is the oldest daughter of her parents so once they make her go for a financial help to their rich relatives.
