In Leroy Strachan’s Shoes
“Everybody makes a mistake,” we often say this unconsciously. People make mistakes all the time in their life, because human beings are not perfect. But it is more important that people do not make the same mistake again. Leroy Strachan, who murdered police officer John Milledge, made a blunder at the age of 17. It is both true that he killed someone, and that he did not make the same mistake again. And I firmly believe that Strachan should not go to jail. There are three reasons for my opinion.
First of all, he was too young to know what was wrong or right. He was just a seventeen-year-old boy. Although some people said that he was almost an adult, I’m sure that he was an immature and inexperienced boy. He was with his friend who tried to climb the fence to watch a football game, but he did not make it over. Unfortunately, Officer M. did not know exactly what was doing, and started to hit him with a stick. Strachan was frightened. So he got a rifle from his friend and fired a shot. He could not make the right decision in the heat of the moment. Besides, he did not intend to kill him on purpose. He was just a foolish boy who tried to get away from the angry officer. Secondly, he has been doing great since he killed officer Milledge. Strachan was not only a great father, but also a sincere elevator operator at work. In addition, Mr. Strachan attended church and sang in the choir. When people who know Strachan heard about the tragic incident, they could not believe it. Harry Hunter, one of the friends of Strachan, wrote a letter. “Leroy helped me. He fed me and gave me a place to sleep. Leroy got me a job. He even gave me clothes to wear. Leroy is a good, kind-hearted man. He would do almost anything for you.” Finally, he has also suffered for a long time. Physical pain can be treated by medicine, but illness of the mind cannot be. He couldn’t tell anyone what he did, even his wife. It has hung over his head for a long time. Even if he could go to police earlier, his guilty conscience didn’t vanish from his mind.
