WHAT IS A TEST?
TEST: a method of measuring a person’s ability, knowledge or performance in a given domain
•method => an instrument (a set of techniques, procedures, or items)
•measure => a means for offering the test-taker some kind of result
•a person => a test measures individual's ability, knowledge, or performance (competence)
•domain => to measure the desired criterion and not include other factors inadvertently
⇒ Well-constructed test: an instrument that provides an accurate measure of the test-taker’s ability within a particular domain
ASSESSMENT AND TEACHING
° Test: an instrument or procedure designed to elicit performance from learners with the purpose of measuring their attainment of specified criteria.
° Assessment: a much wider domain than tests.
- Whenever a student responds to a question, offers a comment, or tries out a new word or structure.
- Performance that is assessed by self, teacher, and other students.
- A good teacher never ceases to assess students whether those assessment
Incidental or intended
° Teaching involves assessment.
