Some movies reflect the milieu of a certain era which could be represented aesthetically and periodically. These films are genre films. Most genre films have their inherence and could be classified through a certain form of narrative, typical characters, formal structure and symbols. We call it the generic myths, conventions, and iconography of genre and these could be found by observing two films which are same genres from different time periods. John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon and Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye are hardboiled-detective film - one is a model of 1940s and the other is 1970s in terms of the style. Detective films are one type of mystery films creating a sense of mystery and suspense, and then sending the protagonist forth in finding out the solution.
