Every literary work is based on specific historical background because authors are influenced by the surroundings without knowing it. Even in some cases, authors directly reflect the phases of the times to criticize the absurdity in it. It is required for us to grasp this kind of influence of background to understand the underlying meaning of literature deeply thereby we can compare its time period with the era when we live now. In the comparison we may reflect on the contemporary problems of our society and gradually find some clues to solve them. In this perspective we can analyze the play 『Death of a Salesman』 and think about the similar problems of our society. The play’s historical background is the late 1920’s when the Great Depression was just about to happen and the consumerism and the American dreams were prevalent. And I think there are three major similarities between the issues in the play and those of Korean society. So this essay will explain them respectively.
