PART Ⅰ
This paper is composed of three parts. There are the Chinese migration in its historical con-text, distribution pattern of overseas Chinese, occupations of the Chinese abroad.

The Chinese migration in its historical context : For many dynastic periods, Emigration abroad was prohibited by imperial decree. Nevertheless, the value of the foreign trade was too great to be ignored So gradually the governors of certain provinces eased the e migration restrictions on merchants. Consequently a great many Chinese communities in Southeast Asia were formed and flourished during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the middle of the seventeenth century the first group of Chinese appeared in Japan. And Chinese emigration to Brazil was taking place before the opening of treaty ports in China in the early 1840's. The 1840-1850 decade marked the beginning of China's contact with the West on an unprecedented scale
