CONVERSATION BETWEEN CALVIN AND BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX ON SOTERIOLOGY
Introduction
Although Calvin criticized severely the mysticism of the Middle Ages, he respected Bernard of Clairvaux, who was a mystic in the Middle Ages. He often quoted the writings of Bernard in his works. Bernard was one of the several monks whom Calvin respected. The purpose of this research is to compare the perspectives of the two great spiritual figures on salvation. In addition, I will explain the parts of Bernard’s theology Calvin accepted or neglected. In doing this, the study can discover what Calvin failed to inherit the legacy of Bernard. After that, I will propose some suggestions for current Protestants.
This study will, at first, refer to primary sources. In addition, I will consult secondary works to find other theologians’ reviews and opinions. In doing this, I will be able to keep my balance of objectivity. This research will mainly deal with the perspectives of the two people on salvation. As for the contents of the study, first, I will examine Bernard’s influence on Calvin. Next, my research will compare the two theologians’ perspectives on some questions about salvation.
Bernard’s influence on Calvin
First, I will study Bernard’s influence on Calvin. Calvin did not experience medieval monastic spirituality. Instead, he could learn various areas, including rhetoric, logic, arts, laws, theology, languages, etc. due to the help of his father. Nonetheless, in his works, he referred forty-one times to Bernard, who was one of the most important figures in medieval monasticism. The reason why Calvin was drawn to Bernard was that there were some commonalities between them. Both of them experienced conversion and began a new life when they were in their early twenties. Bernard began as a monk and Calvin began as a reformer. They both desired a quiet life, but were forced to live actively as leaders.
The purpose of Calvin’s reference to Bernard was to defend his position against the Roman Church.
