On December 1, 2019, in China, the virus COVID-19 occurred. The virus has spread all over the world, and even at this moment, the situation is getting out of hand. The infectiousness of COVID-19 is very high, even worse than SARS pandemic in 2003. The main infection factor of COVID-19 is thought to be caused via respiratory droplets, however some studies reported that COVID-19 was also detected in feces and could serve as a valid infection route. [2] The symptoms of COVID-19 are vomiting and diarrhea, which allow the virus to escape from the patient's body.
After vomiting and diarrhea, the virus still exists only in the toilet bowl. However, after flushing the toilet, the virus spreads throughout the entire toilet. This phenomenon can be explained by sneeze effect, a term coined by Dr Charles Gerba. [5] Sneeze effect is the phenomenon that the virus spreads when flushing the toilet, creating an invisible cloud of dirty water and pathogens that is projected out of the toilet bowl, and this cloud spreads all over the toilet, even spreading up to 8 feet away. Even closing the toilet lid cannot perfectly block off sneeze effect, so there are always exists warning of pathogens when flushing the toilet. Still some studies and research warn flushing the toilet, but there is no action taken against this situation. So, we designed new toilet cover to protect toilet from pathogens, and sneeze effect.
Our purpose of designing toilet cover is mainly concentrates on completely block off the sneeze effect, blocking the outlet of infectious cloud injecting or inhaling air from the toilet cover. By varying the angle of injection and change the speed of air, we are looking for optimize speed and angle for the sneeze effect blocking toilet cover.
