ABSTRACT
Fluoride penetration into the enamel and anticariogenic
effect of a light-cured glass ionomer as a bracket adhesive

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anticariogenic effect of a light-cured glass ionomer cement used for direct bonding brackets. The effect of preventing initial caries, and the absorption of fluoride ions released from the cement into tooth substance surrounding the bracket were measured. The brackets were bonded to recently extracted human premolars; group 1 with a resin cement (Monolock 2, 3M, USA ) and group 2 with a light-cured glass ionomer cement (Fuji ortho LC, GC, Japan). After storage in 37℃ water for 2 weeks to allow penetration of fluoride, they were thermocycled 500 times at 5℃ / 55℃ with dwell time of 1 minute. The conce
ntration and distribution of fluoride penetrated into the enamel under and around the brackets were analyzed using EPMA.
Artificial caries were induced in tooth substance surrounding the brackets with an artificial lactic acid and they were observed using a polarized microscope to study the concentration and anticariogenic effect of fluoride surrounding tooth substance.
The following results were obtained:
1. In both groups, the concentration of fluoride within 20㎛ depth from the tooth surface underneath bracket were higher than the deeper place. There were almost constant fluoride concentration in the enamel deeper than 20㎛ depth in both groups. Within 10㎛ depth from the surface, the concentration of fluoride was higher in group 2.
2. Group 2 showed higher concentration of fluoride than group 1 in all spots starting from the edge of the brackets to 250㎛ distance at a depth of 5㎛.
3. The depth of caries lesion surrounding brackets was smaller in group 2 than group 1 when observed with a polarized microscope.
4. The group 1(113.9±21.6㎛) showed deeper lesions than group 2(87.3±20.2㎛) when the arti
ficial caries were induced in both groups. The difference was statistically signifiicant
(p < 0.05).
