[Abstract]
Demoniac Elements in Cleopatra
Myung-Soon, Kang
Hellenism and Hebraism are two main streams that have shaped the foundation of Western culture. In most of Shakespeare's works we often find the influence of the both. Antony and Cleopatra is not an exception. In Antony and Cleopatra there are many references to Greek mythology, such as Venus, Mars, Hercules etc. and we also find the image of a serpent, an apparently Biblical image as the central image of Cleopatra. The serpent is certainly the symbol of Satan in the Bible. In this paper I have tried to investigate the demoniac or Satanic elements of Cleopatra that correspond with her serpent image. Because of limited space I have only dealt with her three demoniac aspects: falsehood, deception or betrayal and inconsistency.
The Bible says that Satan is the father of the lie. Cleopatra never hesitates or feels guilty for telling a lie whenever she thinks it will be useful. To give Antony a false report of her death and thereby cause him to attempt to commit suicide is a good example. Secondly, Cleopatra is very crafty and shows aspects of betrayal especially in the scene with Thidias. As Caesar's victory over Antony becomes clear, Cleopatra flatters Caesar through his messenger, Thidias. When Antony appears in the scene, however, she suddenly and completely changes her attitude and avows her eternal love for Antony. Thirdly, just like a winding serpent, Cleopatra is quite inconsistent and it is almost impossible for anyone to tell her true intentions. As an example the scene with the eunuch Seleucus shows "her infinite variety".
The above shows that Cleopatra, in accordance with her serpent image, has some demoniac, or Satanic aspects to her. As the serpent is her central image in the work, it may be said that in spite of the frequent references to Greek mythology the Biblical influence or the influence of Hebraism is more governing than that of Hellenism in Antony and Cleopatra.
