A B S T R A C T
The Family Consciousness of Adolescents in Nuclear Families *
- A case study for the consciousness of students in Cheju-Do -
Man becomes a member of a family from his birth and broadens his social recognition through the human relationships among the other members of the family. His consciousness from the human relationships in the family can have much influence on his future social life.
Therefore, this study aims to examine what family consciousness they have, and to furnosh with useful guidence for students, which will be helpful to both home education and citizenship education.
Toward the goals, the method and procedures for the study are as followings.
First, a questionnaire is made out based on the previous original studies. The questionnaire is composed of 12 items from the preliminary investigation.
Second, the sample size is 300 students from primary, middle and high schools in Cheju-Do. The four independent variables for the study are sex, residential area, age and family type.
Third, for the analysis of the data we used SPSS\PC+. We analyzed the defferentials of students family consciousness by their sex, age, residential area and family types.
The results of this study lead to the following conclusions.
(1) While adolescents of Cheju-Do have the strong traditional familism and authoritarianism in regard to the filial piety to their parents and relatives, they have some more individualistic consciousness in the aspects of brothers and sisters' relationship, woman's status, family consciousness and population consciousness. In this sense, the tradional family consciousness is on the gradual decline.
(2) The traditional familism and authoritarianism were stronger for men than for weman.
(3) Most such kinds of the studies report that when people become old, they have a strong traditional family consciousness, but not in Cheju-Do. That is, adolescents have this value of life, only in regard to home importance and population consciousness. And they have rather a strong traditional family consciousness in other aspects, when they are young.
(4) Adolescents from counties (Eups and Myuns) have more traditional family consciousness than those from cities.
(5) The differences of the family consciousness by parents' status and family's importance were statistically significant at the level of 5%.
These findings suggest that we should try to enhance the view of value of adolescents, suitable to today's family types, both in home and school education for the young people.
