Importance of Nitration

- Starting materials for the prepatation of more complex products by typical reations of methylene compounds such as alkylations, aldol condensations, Michael condensations and Mannich reation.
The positional selectivity (regioselectivity) is determined by the spin density in the aromatic cation radical (ArH+·), this being the driving force for the collapse of the [ArH+·, NO2·] complex into the σ-intermediate.
