It was early in the morning in November 1994. It must have been cold, because I remember white steam of breath coming out of Mom's pale-blue lips. Holding my small, frozen hand, Mom was leading me to an elementary school it was to be the first day of my school life. Walking on a crowded street filled with children, however, I was soon becoming more and more annoyed by the giggling sound coming from behind, obviously aimed at me. When I saw crowds of kids walking by my side, I quickly shook off free from Mom's hand. I felt sorry for my mom, but I didn't want to be seen by my potential classmates as a baby who still clung to her mommy. Mom seemed surprised at my sudden behavior, but I could not find any look of disappointment on her face. Instead, she walked as if nothing had happened. She had always been a considerate mother for me, and I think she knew but pretended not to that I was being self-conscious about the mocking words from bigger children. The way to the school was in total disorder. Both its sides were packed with various shops, and the road was unpaved. Most dangerously, there were no traffic signals. Cars and students were mingled all together in that narrow one-way road. All of a sudden, all these cars and students disappeared from my vision with a loud "BANG". After a sudden blackout, I gathered my senses back and realized that I was facing the ground. Shocked, I sat up and saw a terribly large truck looking down upon me.
1994년 11월의 어느 아침 엄마의 창백한 입술에서 입김이 나올 정도로 추운 날이었다. 엄마는 나의 차가워진 작은 손을 이끌고 초등학교로 데려가는 중이었다. 다른 아이들로 북적대는 길거리에서 나를 보고 웃는 듯한 다른 아이들의 키득거림에 점점 화가 나가 시작했고 그 아이들이 내 옆을 지나가는 찰나에 엄마의 손을 뿌리치며 놓았다. 엄마에겐 좀 미안했지만 앞으로 같은 반이 될지도 모르는 친구들 앞에서 어린아이처럼 보이긴 싫었다.
