Introduction
It is well known that Friedrich Schleiermacher had a great effect on the history of theology. Even Karl Barth who is regarded as one of the most important theologians thought that he was one of the best theologians. Many scholars regard him as a father of modern theology. These days many theologians are studying his theology. He is regarded as the most important theologian of the 19th century.
On the other hand most people will regard Karl Barth as the most important theologian of the 20th century. As we know well, he is a theologian who changed the trend of theology in the 20th century. These days there are many studies and critiques of his theology. Some conservative theologians tend to accuse him of making Christian theology deviate from the traditional doctrine. However, we cannot deny his great contribution to the history of Christianity and Christian theology.
My purpose here is to study the theological methods of the two great theologians and thus find some important principles of theological method. Then I can apply these principles to the situation of this generation. My study may be divided into three main parts: (1) a background of their theology, (2) theological methods of the two theologians, (3) a comparison between the theological methods of the two theologians. It will take a lot of time and effort for me to study all the areas of their theology. Therefore, my study will be limited to their theological methods.
I will consult some works of theologians and scholars which deal with Schleiermacher and Barth. There are many books and theses which are related to these two theologians. However, I as a novice in this field will mainly refer to the works of the two theologians in order to study concentrically and directly their theology. My study will deal with two main themes. Firstly, I will study a background of their theology, and then I can find the elements which affected their theological method. Secondly, I will find the merits and demerits of their theological methods. I think that this work is needed for the application to our recent theology.
Schleiermacher’s theology
In order to study Schleiermacher’s theological method it is necessary for us to examine the elements which affected his theology. I think there are three trends of thought which had a main influence on him: the Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Pietism. I will examine these influences in detail these effects below.
A background of Schleiermacher’s theology
Schleiermacher is a theologian as well as a philosopher who is related to the Enlightenment in the 18th century because he lived in that century.
