HISTORICAL STUDY ON THE REASON OF ICONOCLASTIC CONTROVERSY: THEOLOGICAL AND POLITICAL USE
Introduction
Iconoclastic controversy is a well known matter of church history. It sacrificed so many people’s lives and the unity of the church. Therefore, it is necessary for us to know why the controversy arose and why it needed so much sacrifice. The purpose of this research is to examine the reason why it appeared in the church history and to find what some spiritual leaders’ opinions are on the matter.
I will examine the theme chronologically as focusing church history. The study will refer to primary sources and secondary sources to keep a balance on objectivity. As for scope of the research, it will deal with theological and political aspects of the controversy. Moreover, the research will deal with the period from the early church to the reformation.
The early church and icon
Christians in the early church began to worship God in private houses. So, it seems that these houses did not have many images of Christianity. However, as Christians began to have their own graveyard and chapel, Christian arts began to develop. These early arts were mainly murals which were found on the walls of churches and catacombs.
Early Christians painted mostly images of communion because it was the center of their worship. Images of fish were the first symbol of Christianity. These images were often found on Epitaphs as well as paintings of Christian art. Various biblical events were also often showed in Christian art. These paintings were not real but symbolic and metaphorical. In the early ages, Christian apologists tended to reject and condemn images of God.
Until the end of the fourth century the paintings of Christ were rare. However, from the middle of the fifth century, the representations of Christ often appeared. With the development of the use of icons, many kinds of superstitions were also developed. Regarding the matter, some bishops and spiritual leaders were concerned about a possibility that Christians could regard icon as idol.
