When did you last take a look into your waste container shortly before the garbage truck pulled up? I’m not suggesting that you make a devotion of monitoring your daily domestic waste flow, for that, by any logical stretch, will be time wasted on waste: but just, though without any right to, wondering if you really take notice of your daily contribution to the national garbage pool. It could be the mounds of titbits from last night’s supper, the heap of wrappings from MacDonald’s, or the baleful mess of clothing that wont fit anymore since, like any other people, fattening is your hobby (Cocks 10-13). Nevertheless, I’m only concerned about your personal input into the collective environmental pollution. Now here I surely have a right to chatter and complain. Don’t I?
Not at a personal level, however, in the wider scheme of things, if you have the intellectual capacity to reason at that level; I wish you do- it is the impact of the “leftovers and by-products of our existence” that is threatening the ecological balance of our planet. From domestic refuse, industrial and traffic emissions to greenhouse effect, the consequences of human activities have proved to be hazardous and costly. A new reality is setting in; global warming, desertification, droughts and scarcity of natural resources (Goldstein 65-67).
