I Want To Be Happy
At this point of my life, I realize more than ever the need to be happy. If I am happy and delighted, I can be enthusiastic and have a zestful approach to life as I find joy and happiness in my life and infect those around me with my exuberance.
Previously, I used to dwell in negativism and happiness often eluded me. When I learnt to practise optimism, I realized it is actually a catalyst for happiness. With optimism, there is no necessity to remain sad or depressed for long. Cliched as it may sound, I learnt to see that the glass is half full and not half empty.
Another way I found happiness is to record those precious moments in my notebook. With this, whenever I feel down, all I have to do is to read those entries that highlighted the special moments of joy be it a surprise visit, phone call, email and the smile would come to my face as I realize that life is not so bad after all.
Whenever people ask me how I am, I never fail to reply "Good' whereas in the past I would gripe or say 'okay' weakly. In this way, I can control the mood and focus of the communication. If I gripe, not only am I unhappy but I can also affect the poor listener.
Of course, I am not at all suggesting that we suppress our emotions and run away from reality. All I am saying is that we need to look at the bright side of life. Yes, there are ups and downs but while acknowledging the downs, let the ups pull us up!
When I feel stressed or particularly agitated, I will go on a 'pamper myself treat'. I could retreat to my room and fill it with flowers, candles, beautiful artwork, photographs, inspirational reading material, and music. To make myself feel better, I even use aromatherapy oils and body lotion and infuse the room with lavender. Then I will spend as much time there as possible and ban worry from my retreat and delight in the serenity and pleasure it will bring me.
At this point of my life, I try to do something NEW every week. I also try to learn a new skill once in a while. So far, I have taken up French, cookery lessons, art lessons and a few other classes. It makes me happy to learn something new.
On the home front, I try to cook at least one delightful new dish for the family or to jazz up old dishes with some new ingredient.
Being a dreamer, I am also happy when I update my Lifetime To Do List. It is an on-going list of things I want to do that will bring DELIGHT into my life. This includes things as simple as taking up a new hobby. I slip into my world of daydreams whenever I read my Lifetime To Do List in my retreat and begin looking for ways to make it a reality.
In order to make room for more happiness in my life, I sometimes clear out the clutter in my life and this includes areas of my mind, physical environment, finances and professional/personal relationships that need some cleaning up. I begin with the smallest messes and then the larger messes after which I take the necessary steps to consolidate my position in those areas.
