DEAFBLIND PORTFOLIO에 대한 보고서 자료입니다.

목차

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of my study, I will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the three main conditions that cause deafblindness and investigate the incidence of deafblindness in Australia.

2. Identify the main barriers to communication experienced by people who are deafblind and describe communication methods and technology used to overcome these barriers.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the support that is needed to access the community and complete daily living tasks.

4. Identify the main barriers to leisure and describe four leisure activities that can be completed independently by people who are deafblind.

5. Describe some of the main services in Sydney that provide for the deafblind community and list ways to improve these services based on my findings.

6. Investigate the community's percepetion of the deafblind community and report on their awareness and ability to perform any of the communication methods the deafblind may use.

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the three main conditions that cause deafblindness and investigate the incidence of deafblindness in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has estimated that 19% of the Australian population has some kind of disability. Approximately 10 000 people in this population can be defined as ‘deafblind’. The term ‘deafblind’ casts many people’s thoughts back to the story of Helen Keller. In reality, deafblindness has many different forms and affects people in a variety of ways. Deafblindness has adverse effects on both developmental and the language processes, as well as the behaviour and personality of a person. The range and severity of the impairment can vary greatly from person to person. It can be complicated by the age of onset, cause, environment, culture, additional disabilities, skills and abilities of carers and professionals working with the person who is deafblind and community attitudes.
People who are deafblind can be grouped into the following 4 main catagories:
1. Congenital deafblindness (95% of students who are deafblind in Queensland schools fall into this category)
2. Congenital deafness and acquired blindness
3. Congenital blindness and acquired deafness
4. Acquired both deafness and blindness after childhood
There are many causes of deafblindess. As a health professional, it is important to be aware of these for the following reasons:
1. Assists in explaining characteristics and behaviours
2. Indicates whether the condition is degenerative or stable
3. Indicates medical needs
4. Guides decisions for educational instruction, adaptation, orientation and mobility and communication methods
Some causes of Deafblindness are as follows:
• Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)
• Cytomegalovirus
• Usher Syndrome
• CHARGE Association
• Meningitis
• Maternal Rubella
• Infections such as encephalitis
• Brain tumour
• Head injury
• Ageing
• Pre and Postnatal trauma such as asphyxia, prematurity or cerebral palsy
• Maternal alcohol and drug addiction
The main causes that I will discuss further are:
1. Usher Syndrome
2. CHARGE Association
3. Congenital Rubella Syndrome
