Understanding of the True Value of Booker T. Washington’s Idea

Racial discrimination and its related problems have constantly occurred for a couple of centuries in U.S. history. In particular, white people have strongly oppressed blacks for long periods of times in history. After the Civil War, even though the black population was legitimately free, unfortunately, they were not entirely free. The binding laws of segregation still kept blacks in social and economic bondage, and invisible barriers kept them from excelling to their fullest abilities. In this melancholy situation, many prominent black leaders rose to make better situations for the black population. Most significantly, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, both early advocates of a civil rights movement, offered different strategies to achieve solutions to the discrimination experienced by black men and women. Despite having that in common, the two men had almost completely opposite approaches to that goal. Du Bois obsessively transfixed on white racism and followed a reactive approach, while Washington's focus on the moral and intellectual short-comings of black culture took a proactive stance. Considering the social environments and atmosphere of the U.S. at that time, Booker T. Washington’s idea was much more effective than W.E.B Du Bois’ for the African-American population in the long run. In short, Washington's idea was correct at many levels, and his historical reputation should be revised to reflect that.
