Since drugs are discovered about 5000 years ago, there have been many enduring controversies in terms of its therapeutic value and harm (Koch). It is a fact that narcotics have been used for medical use and it is also historically true that drugs have been treated as social evil. Proponents argue that marijuana has been used as a medicine for long times and it is sole alternative treatment that does not cause side effects which most of modern medicines have (Koch). The supporters also claim that current drug policy violates people’s right of choice in terms of medical treatment (Koch). Conversely, opponents maintain that any scientific proof of marijuana for medical use has not been proved (Koch). For making right choice, we need to seriously consider about its effectiveness as a medicine, social impacts able to happen, potential problems caused by. In my opinion, medical use of marijuana should not be legalized because marijuana has not been proved its therapeutic effects as a medicine, legalization of marijuana cannot solve the current drug problem, and marijuana is harmful for human’s health.

Since marijuana was discovered, human has suffered from the drug. Also, because marijuana is very addictive and mind-altering, some people have pursued short-term pleasure. There is a Korean old saying; the wise man exercises restraint in his behavior and enjoyment. Human should do what the wise man do because human is able to determine what is right and to know what not to do. Personally, I am glad the fact that marijuana is strictly under-controlled for any purpose in my country. I partly concede that patients have the right to choice the way of treatments. However, if we consider its social ripple effect, we should esteem the whole society health as well as individual’s right. Other may refute that this is just cultural difference between oriental and western ways viewpoint to look at individual and society; however, at least, there has not a big drug related problem in my country. Even though marijuana performs as a great temporary remedy, marijuana for medical purpose should not be legalized because first, there is no scientific proof that marijuana has therapeutic value, second, even though marijuana would be medically legalized, it will make the drug problems even worse, and marijuana is harmful for human’s health.
