Introduction
In February 2009, United States President Barack Obama addressed the Joint Congress Session:”We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy. Yet we import more oil today than ever before.” This was a striking message from one of the world’s most powerful man as it acknowledged both the problem of declining oil reserves and the urgent need to find other energy sources. This essay supports president Obama’s statement by outlining the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats of alternative energies, in the hopes of proving that oil-dependency can be stopped, and making readers of different backgrounds understand that using alternative energies is workable in their countries or places of origin. Success stories of particular places that have already utilized substitute power sources are contained in this essay to provide a clear picture of the objectives.
Besides being chemistry major with frequent exposures to science and technology, this researcher has two main reasons for expressing interest in the subject. First, there is a scientific explanation that attempts to weigh the technical advantages of alternative energy sources against oil. The subject is therefore informative and useful to future generations. Second, since oil production negatively affects the environment and oil reserves are declining to the alarm of the world, the discussion on alternative energies has high social relevance which calls for creativity and collective action.
