“Film noir is often described as essentially pessimistic… The movies are seen as depicting a world that is inherently corrupt. Classic film noir has been associated by many critics with the American social landscape of the era—in particular, with a sense of heightened anxiety and alienation…” (Wikipedia). Director Ridley Scott made a set of a classic SF with film noir in Blade Runner. Criticism is an indispensable element in film noir, and Scott smartly projects the criticisms into a murky portrait of the future instead of the present-day landscape setting. His deliberation is the fear of present-day, and in order to convey the meaning, Mise-en-scene such as setting, costume, lighting, and acting are well manipulated.
The background of Blade Runner is LA in the year 2019. This is the world that junk tech exists, and the world is consisted of vertical structures. I think director intently places social structure and building structure setting in vertical way along with pyramid shape.
