Formation of Women’s New Identity in Thelma and Louise
The movie, Thelma and Louise, directed by Ridley Scott, reveals how two women seize
their own ironical freedom in the end of the film by encountering and overcoming many difficulties.
The difficulties displayed on the movie are always triggered by male figures, who suppress, belittle
and beguile women, caging them in a world where they have to be obedient and submissive,
revealing mens’ real tyrannical faces from deep down in their heart. All male characters, regardless
of their social status, present the unfavorable facets of masculinity, discriminating women by
making them to follow their decisions both directly and indirectly. Through the rough journey,
Thelma and Louise find their real independent identity by extricating themselves from the society’s
definition of women’s identity.
