소설 <마틸다> 역시 로알드 달의 소설로 “마틸다”라는 소녀가 주인공이다. 마틸다는 부모님, 오빠와 함께 산다.
마틸다의 부모님은 자신들만의 시간을 보내느라 자식들을 제대로 돌봐주지 않았다. 어머니는 동네 Bingo 샵에 가서 하루 종일 놀다가 늦게 돌아오고, 아버지는 중고차 판매사원이라 늦게 집으로 돌아왔다. 거기에 더해 아버지는 중고차의 계기판을 조작해서 비싼 가격에 되파는 불법적인 일을 하고 있었다. 게대가 이 부모님은 독서와 공부보다 능력있는 남자를 만나서 결혼을 하거나 꾀를 써서 돈을 많이 버는 것이 최고라고 생각하는 사람들이었다. 그래서, 마틸다가 책을 읽거나 산수를 잘하면 못마땅하게 생각했다.
이런 부모님 밑에서 마틸다는 혼자서 글을 깨우치고, 스스로를 돌보는 아이로 자라게 되었다. 그리고, 드디어 초등학교에 입학하게 되는데, 과연 마틸다의 학교생활은 어땠을까? 설렘을 가득 안고 시작한 학교생활은 다행히도 아이들을 진정으로 위해주는 “제니퍼 하니” 담임선생님을 만나서 나름 잘 헤쳐 나간다. 하지만, 학교에는 무서운 독재자 “애거사 트런치불” 교장선생님이 있었다. 마틸다는 이 교장선생님의 폭력적인 교육방법이 마음에 들지 않았고, 어떻게 교장선생님에게 복수할지 고민도 하면서 하루하루 학교생활을 흥미진진하게 이어나간다.
뭐니뭐니해도 나에게 가장 인상깊었던 장면은 마지막에 마틸다가 부모님과 헤어져 제니퍼 하니 선생님과 함께 살게 되었을 때 불법적으로 중고차를 조작해 팔던 아버지의 사업이 문제가 생겼을 때이다. 갑작스레 스페인으로 도주하게된 가족들을 뒤로하고 마틸다가 제니퍼 하니 선생님과 함께 살게 해달라고, 부모님을 설득해 달라고 부탁하는 장면인데 제니퍼 하니 선생님이 마틸다의 부모님을 찾아가서 마틸다를 자신에게 맡겨달라고 부탁을 한다. 그 부탁에 아버지는 너무 쿨하게 승낙하고 공항으로 떠나버린다. 그렇게 가족들이 탄 차가 떠나는 것을 지켜보는 마틸다와 제니퍼 하니 선생님의 모습을 보면서 과연 마틸다는 마냥 행복했을까? 라는 생각을 하게 되었다. 그렇다. 밝은 소설이지만 나에게는 주인공 마틸다의 상황이 마냥 밝지만은 않았던 느낌의 소설이었다.

Under these parents, Matilda learned to write by herself and grew up as a child who cared for her. Finally, she entered elementary school. Matilda\'s school life started with a lot of excitement, fortunately, She met my homeroom teacher, Jennifer Hani, who cares for my children, and I got through it my way. However, there was a terrible principal teacher , \"Agatha Trunchbull.\" Matilda didn\'t like Principal\'s violent way of education, so she continues her school life with great interest every day, thinking about how to get revenge on the principal.
After all, the most impressive scene for me was the last time Matilda broke up with her parents and lived with Jennifer Hani when there was a problem with her father\'s business, which he had illegally manipulated and sold used cars. When Matilda\'s family suddenly had to ranaway to Spain and Matilda asks persuade her parents to leave her here and allows live with her teacher, Jennifer Hani visits Matilda\'s parents and asks her to leave Matilda to herself. At that request, my father agrees too coolly and leaves for the airport. I wondered if Matilda was just happy to see her family\'s car leave with Jennifer Hani, and actually Matilda\'s situation in the novel was not always bright to me.
