Abstract
Salmonella species were isolated from chickens with fowl paratyphoid occurred from October in 1992 to April in 1997. The clinical signs and lesions of poultry flocks were examined and biochemical properties, antibiotic susceptibility, plasmid profiles and outer membrane protein(OMP) profiles of the samonella isolates were also investigated.
Salmonella strains isolated from 20 poultry flocks were grouped into 3 species as 11 strains of Salmonella typhimurium, 8 of S. enteritidis and 1 of S. mbandaka. Among 11 strains of S. typhimurium, 2 were isolated from adult layer, 2 from young chickens, 5 from broiler and 1 strain each from quail and duck. Among 8 strains of S. enteritidis, 7 strains were isolated from adult layer and 1 from broiler and 1 strain of S. mbandaka was isolated from adult layer.
Most of the young chickens infected with fowl paratyphoid showed their clinical signs and post-mortem characteristics with grayish white diarrhea, swollen liver with grayish white necrotic foci, splenomegaly, swollen gall bladder, pericarditis and increased opacity of the cornea. In adult chickens, characteristic clinical signs or splenomegaly were not observed but swollen liver with necrotic and hemorrhagic foci were observed. Mortality rate of young chickens(6.55%) was significantly higher than that of adult chickens(0.47%)(p<0.05).
S. typhimurium isolates were resistant to AM(27%), CM(27%), TE(27%), SM(18%) and CB(18%) while S. enteritidis isolates were only resistant to CB(38%). A total of Salmonella species isolates were susceptible to GM, CL, ENR, KM and NN.
Plasmid analysis of S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis isolates indicated that all isolates tested contained an approximately molecular weight of 23 kb plasmid. Specially, S. typhimurium isolates contained an approximately molecular weight of 65 kb plasmid but S. enteritidis isolates contained an approximately molecular weight of 54 kb plasmid. In addition to a 23 kb plasmid, S. typhimurium isolates contained approximately molecular weight of 8.0, 5.8, 4,2 and 2.3 kb plasmids.
Among the serotypes, the major outer membrane protein pattern was consistent with all strains tested. The outer membrane protein profiles of S. typhimurium were similar to those of S. enteritidis except that a 33.2 kd polypeptide existed in S. typhimurium and 33.0 kd polypeptide in S. enteritidis.
