The Aspects of Correlations between Korean Sinpa-theatre in 1910s and Traditional Performance

In this thesis, I tried to examine the evolution of Korean 'Sinpa-theatre[신파극]' in 1910s in connection with traditional performance involving 'Changgeug[창극]', assuming that the correlations between the former and the latter have formed a great shape of history of Korean modern theatre.
Until now it has been a general evaluation that Sinpa-theatre in 1910s enlarged and popularized the sentiments of colonized people. But I have found this negative evaluation is baseless after investigating the repertories of Korean Sinpa-theatre in my previous thesis Repertories of Korean Sinpa-theatre in 1910s. Therefore it would rather be reasonable to recognize that they have inherited the traditional emotion expressed in Korean classic novels in Lee-Dynasty.
Bearing this facts in mind, in this thesis I have examined the correlations between Korean Sinpa-theatre in 1910s and traditional performance. After this work, I can recognize that Sinpa-theatre has succeeded traditional performance in the method of performing like a 'Witticism play[재담극]' and earnestly, it has dramatized Korean classic novels or accommodated the subject-matter of them.
Besides the subjects of traditional performance have attemped to perform Sinpa-theatre taking advantage of its popularity and organized a dramatic company like 'Gaeryangdan'[개량단] to perform Sinpa-theatre. We can find this correlations in 1920s and afterwards, then we can acknowledge that Korean Sinpa-theatre in 1910s and traditional preformance have had an effect on each other and shaped the core of popular theatre afterwards.
