"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"에서 Macomber는 평소에는 부인에게 농락당하고 이용당하고, Africa에 사냥을 와서는 죽음에 대한 두려움 때문에 사자 사냥 때 도망치는 겁쟁이의 모습을 보여준다. 하지만 그는 죽음의 순간에는 모든 두려움과 공포에서 해방된 영웅적인 모습을 보여주며 죽음을 맞이한다.
In Our Time에서는 주인공들이 수동적인 입장에서 삶과 죽음을 인식해 나간 것이라면 "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"와 "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"에서 주인공들은 직접 죽음을 경험하게 되며 죽음의 순간에 이르러서 자신들의 이상을 불태우게 된다. 하지만 In Our Time과 "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"와 "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"의 공통된 일관된 정신은 인간은 죽음을 염두에 두고 살아야 하고 그렇게 함으로써 인간은 더 진하고 강렬한 삶을 살 수 있다는 것이다.

The Life and Death in Hemingway's Stories
Absract Pilseon Choi
Hemingway's stories are powerfully concerned with death. This is made clear in the collection In Our Time. In Our Time is composed of 17 vignettes and 15 stories. The vignettes have a clear pattern. The vignettes deal with war, crime, and bullfight. These are related to the chaos, violence and death. Here, the world is not a pretty world and not a safe one. Hemingway represents the world and the human condition as he sees them. So. the vignettes is realistic and impressionistic. The stories focus on boy's initiation into reality. A boy has many experiences about the world and human condition. And he realizes that the world is filled with violence, brutality, and disorder. "Indian Camp" is a story about Nick's initiation into the mysteries of life and death. Nick discovers birth and death alike contain violence and suffering. In "The Battler", the controlled fusion of violence and love initiates Nick. The world is harsh and disappointing place, but not without love and compassion.
In "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", Harry and Macomber die at the moment of insight. They live a regretful life. Harry is corrupt and Macomber is a coward. But at the last moment of life, they act as a hero. So, he has found the new vision. By never giving up their quest and dream despite their mistakes and their flaws, they achieve the transcendence through the death.
