나인 브룩스가 '잘 빚어진 항아리(Well wight urn)'로서 자족적, 자율적인 대상으로서 예술 작품이 가지는 특질들과 달리, 작가의 행위의 결과로서 예술 작품은 자연대상과 구별되는 특질을 가진다. 예컨대, '신뢰할 수 있는, 성숙한, 감각적인, 지적인, 위트있는, 균형잡힌..'/'단순한, 천박한, 방종한, 저속한' 등의 특질들은 작품 속 예술가의 성격을 반영하는 특질들이다. 이런 특질들을 대상(작품)에 부여하는 것은 작품 속에서 자기 스스로의 모습을 드러내는 작가이고 이 특질들은 대상 자체에서 독립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 작가의 행위의 결과로서 나타난 것들이다.
