A species is a group of animals or plants genetically similar and able to reproduce with each other.
종이란 유전적으로 비슷하고 서로 번식이 가능한 동물이나 식물의 집단이다.

A population, on the other hand, is a group of plants or animals of the same species living in the same area that have the opportunity to breed with each other.
개체군은, 또 한편으로, 서로 번식할 기회를 가진 같은 지역에 사는 같은 종의 식물이나 동물의 집단을 말한다.

For example, there is a kind of whale with one population in the Pacific Northwest and a separate population in the Antarctic. Although the animals are the same species, they are geographically isolated and therefore do not commonly breed with each other.
예를 들어, 북서태평양 개체군과 분리된 개체군이 남극에 있는 종류의 고래가 있다.
비록 같은 종의 동물들 이라도 지리적으로 격리되어 있다면 일반적으로 서로 교배하지 않는다.
