Kung-fu-tse, whose name means Master Kung, is honored as one of the greatest scholars of all times. Europeans found it difficult to pronounce Kung-fu-tse, so they changed his name to Confucius.
That is the name by which he came to be generally known in the west. In the fifth century before Christ, about the time of Socrates, Confucius was already teaching the Chinese how to live better lives.
