듯이 서 있었다. “충분하지 않나요?” 여자아이는 작은 목소리로 물었다.
"It's a little too much," I managed to say, somehow, over the lump in my throat. "You have some change coming." I rummaged around in the cash drawer, dropped two pennies into her open hand, then stood in the doorway watching the children go down the walk carefully carrying their treasure.
“좀 많구나.” 나는 목이 메는 것을 억제하고 간신히 말했다. “거스름돈을 가져가야겠구나.” 나는 현금서랍을 뒤져서 그녀의 펼쳐진 손바닥에 2페니를 떨어뜨리고는 문간에 서서 아이들이 그들의 보물을 조심스럽게 들고 길을 걸어가는 것을 지켜보았다.
When I turned back into shop, my wife was standing on a stool with her arms submerged to the elbows in a tank where she was rearranging the plants. "Mind telling me what that was all about?" she asked. "Do you know how many fish you gave them?"
내가 가게로 돌아왔을 때, 나의 아내는 의자 위에 서서 그녀의 팔을 팔꿈치까지 잠기게 수조 속에 넣고 안에 있는 수초들을 다시 배열하고 있었다. “무슨 일인지 나에게 말해주지 않겠어요?” 그녀는 요청했다. “당신 그 아이들에게 얼마나 많은 물고기를 줬는지 아세요?”
"About 30 dollars' worth," I answered, the lump still in my throat. "But I couldn't have done anything else."
“30달러어치 정도 되겠지.” 나는 목이 메어서 대답했다. “하지만 나는 그렇게 하지 않을 수 없었어.”
When I'd finished telling her about old Mr. Wigden, her eyes were wet, and she stepped off the stool and gave me a gentle kiss on the cheek.
내가 늙은 Wigden 씨에 대한 얘기를 마쳤을 때 그녀의 눈은 젖어있었고, 그녀는 의자에서 내려와 나의 뺨에 부드럽게 입맞춤을 했다.
"I still smell the gumdrops," I sighed, and I'm certain I heard old Mr. Wigden chuckle over my shoulder as I swabbed down the last tank.
